The Finishing Touches

Step 6 – From Head To Tail, The Finishing Touches

Time To Complete: Depends on how well you've trained your dog to stand still, roughly 15-20 minutes
Benefits: Awww, c'mon, you're almost finished, you can see the benefits .... and a good, cold drink!

Well, by now your Keeshond is looking pretty good.

Stand your dog up and let him shake once if he wants.

Then gently force him into a sitting position and command him to stay.

Moving around to the right side of the dog (left side for southpaws), reach your hair-holding arm around your dog from behind his head and down between his front legs to pull up on the chest hair.

Now the Chest
Using your brush, brush down and out on the chest hair working your way from the bottom of the chest ... Keeping Working Your Way Up
... to the chin. Up The Throat To The Chin
Next, brush from the side of each cheek forward, working your way back towards the neck, brushing/fluffing the mane forward..
Now stand your dog up. Starting from his forehead, use your hair-holding hand to hold the hair you have yet to brush down flat. Take your brush and brush small amounts of mane forward from the dog’s forehead, working your way back to the tail. Along The Topline
Now go behind the dog and pull the britches hair up with your free hand, then brush it back down and out, much as you did for the chest. First one leg ... First One Pant Leg
... and then the other. Then the Other
Take the big comb and comb the foreleg feathering down.

Finally finish the tail out by laying it flat on his back and brushing half of it to one side and half to the other side of his back. You want the tail to appear as part of the dog’s silhouette, not like a separate appendage, sort of like a flat beavertail on top of his back. Flatten The Tail Out
You’re done! Doesn’t he look great? Aren’t you proud of yourself for being able to do it?  He's A Pretty Boy!
Put your tools away.

Now give your Kees a great big hug and a reward for being good on the table. The biggest reward your Kees would like would be to go for a public walk to display his proud self to the whole world.

Now doesn't this look like a happy boy?

and Happy Too!
Be sure that you always put your Kees on the floor yourself, do not let him jump off. If you allow your dog to jump off on his own, he may hurt himself or at the very least he may decide he can get off whenever he wants to, even if you aren’t finished grooming. So, don’t let this bad habit develop.
